Advancing Indigenous Missions
Bloomington, Indiana 47401
The purpose of AIM is to help missionaries that are native to the area where they work. This is for several reasons.
First, the native understands the customs, language, slang, idioms and laws of their area much better than an outsider.
Second, is that the native is usually physically and emotionally better equipped to meet the challenges of climate and circumstances for a long period of time.
Third, in some cases, Americans have a tendency to "westernize" as they evangelize. Our technology and pace can unwittingly communicate to the native that they are incapable of doing what we do. Using the Apostle Paul as our example, we believe it is necessary to train the indigenous to reach their own and move on. Too often in past missions' endeavors, the missionary was the structure, rather than the scaffolding, resulting poorly upon the departure or death of the missionary.
The fourth reason is simply money. In most cases, the indigenous live the same as those around them which is much less expensive than housing an American. We Americans have a tendency to want to keep some of our modern conveniences to which natives don't often have access.
We believe that American missionaries overseas are necessary in many cases, but the last reason is that there are still parts of the world where westerners are not welcome. There will soon be a great celebration that involves every nation, tribe and tongue; so, somebody's got to reach these closed nations.
