Never having experienced this, what goes on there? I'm not one to push religion into my own kids, other than going to church and fatherly advice. I know that my church has some campouts as well as scout camps where everyone is a member. Beyond that, I don't have any kind of a reference.
Then again, we have "institute" where we jam the scriptures down their thoats while they are in high school. Luckily, I had an early morning job in HS so I didn't have to go. I read the scriptures out of desire, and I didn't turn out too bad. Well, redeemable is probably the better word.

My understanding is that you guys have year 'round Sunday school for your kids. Well, at least for the Orthodox, Sunday school is something completely new. Remember most places where there are Orthodox are Orthodox countries, so historically religion was in the schools and permeated society. Sunday school wasn't necessary. We kind of picked this up from the Protestants- Sunday school and VBS. Most churches don't have Sunday school during the summer months, hence the need for VBS. It's usually a bit more laid back than during the regular school year, and more crafts involved. Anyway, it's a lot of fun for the kids, and usually the adults. It's just turned into a full-time job for me at the moment. Oh well, who wanted to hike anyway?

Catholics don't typically have vacation Bible school, nor Sunday school (as all are welcome at the sacramental service of the Mass (even small children).
We do have Catechism and/or Parochial school. But Catechism was usually held after school during the week day evenings. I do think there are more and more parishes though which are trying this vacation Bible school idea, but it is still a small minority as most rely on the older approach I describe above.

Vacation Bible School is a time for kids to not only learn Scripture but also to have fun while doing it. The summer months can be long and boring. When my daughter was little I called just about every church in our area and found out when they were having VBS and I took my daughter to just about all of them. She went to Church and SS on Sundays but this was a way for her to keep busy and have fun with other kids her age. Nothing was taught against other religions as far as I know.

Well, I would hope not. Still, that does concern me. I'm pretty liberal when it comes to some things and that is one of them. I might hold pretty strong opinions on that but even in priesthood when I teach, I tip-toe around those things. Even more now that I have a former lutheran minister in my class. I can't imagine....well, yes, I can imagine it...teaching kids how "right" they are. And if we weren't so far behind in homeschool, I might contemplate it.

VBS in prot churches is typicallys for a workweek of mornings or days. It is a way to give parents a summer break and get kids some fun lessons on the Bible. Many churches schedule theirs to not conflict with anothers so parents might get their kids to go to many of them.
