Default Thomas More

The Catholic church that is closest to me is named after Thomas More. I didn't know anything about him. I watched the Tudors (not necessarily recommended) and found out who he was. To tell you the truth, it was when he burned some "heretics" at the stake, in this case the person was accusing Rome of overstepping the proper role of the church, that made me just cringe. Funny how someone would accuse the church of overstepping as they were being burned.

Now, England was a mess at this time. Henry VIII was a complete nut-job, and the laws enacted were put in place to gain Rome's favor.

I got this from newadvent.org

Quote:
As chancellor it was his duty to enforce the laws against heretics and, by doing so, he provoked the attacks of Protestant writers both in his own time and since. The subject need not be discussed here, but More's attitude is patent. He agreed with the principle of the anti-heresy laws and had no hesitation in enforcing them. As he himself wrote in his "Apologia" (cap. 49) it was the vices of heretics that he hated, not their persons; and he never proceeded to extremities until he had made every effort to get those brought before him to recant. How successful he was in this is clear from the fact that only four persons suffered the supreme penalty for heresy during his whole term of office.
The show pointed to 6, not 4. Still, I still am glad that christians, heretical or not, do not face this penalty anymore. I am so glad that I don't have to die for my beliefs.

I don't know why the mideaval church, those who favored the martyrs so, decided that they needed to oppress like they were once oppressed. I know, I know, different times. I am just glad that doesn't happen anymore, and people came to their senses. I'm glad I can live for my beliefs, not die for them. (My knod to Patton for that...if you can recall the statement. Not proper to repeat it here.)

I know this won't make you feel any better but St. Thomas More was eventually imprisoned and then beheaded for treason because he would not side with the King in his efforts to obtain a divorce, nor with his split from Rome and the formation of a new Church with the King as its head. At first he had support from the other Lords of the land and so was safe in his resistance, but eventually they caved and he was imprisoned and beheaded.

Oh, I realize the end he came to. I don't think supporting Henry VIII was an admirable goal. The guy was nuts.
