!841 Edition was printed in Nauvoo.It was only the second printing of the BOM and had numerous corrections/changes due to the fact that while JS was in prison he had time to go thru and read the BOM and found errors made in the printing process.Thus as you said ,the BOM 1981 edition closely follows the 1841 edition.

I have 2 reproduction 1830 editions and I treasure them both.When I was investigating the church I almost fainted when found an1830 Reproduction in an LDS bookstore.From all that I had read the LDS Church did not want people to have access to copies of the 1830.I still run into numerous people who are under that same impression and I find it interesting when I show them my 1830 editions.
Deseret put out replicas in 1980(1830+150)so the arguement could be made that the SLC MORMON church is not trying to hide the 1830 edition from the light of day.

I've talked with John a couple of times.I tried to buy the 1841 edition from his site but never recieved any reply. He also has a not very well liked rep among book dealers in SLC.

This does not bode well for this church. They have been shrinking in membership the past years and this will probably cause more problems. Only time will tell.
