Thanks, ctrups
On April 2, 1914, 300 delegates gathered for a conference at the Grand Opera House in Hot Springs, Arkansas, at the invitation of Eudorus N. Bell, publisher of Word and Witness. Not many Americans believed in speaking in tongues or other visible manifestations of the Spirit, such as healing, visions, and everyday miracles. This group did--and enthusiastically so. |

In my understanding/worldview, AOG, Foursquare, etc. were participating in a restoration of Biblical truth in action involving baptism in the Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts.
In each restoration, the existing body of Christ denigrated the newly forming restoration and they ended up being kicked out. Such was the case with (for example) Luther with justiifcation by faith trying to reform the RCC but gettiing the boot, the (ana)baptists with believer's baptism, but getting the boot from Luther; the Methodists with personal holiness getting the boot from Anglicans, people with the baptism of Holy Spirit getting the boot from more traditional churches and so forming their own churches like AOG. This process continues today. SBC booted anyone who accepts women in church leadership, first in USA and then recently in missions. Sad but true. Don |
